Wat Xiengthong is situated
at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. It was built in 1560 by
King Sayasetthathirat and it was the last temple constructed in the ancient
capital before the set of the government was moved to Vientiane. It was the
only monastery to escape to the 1887 fire and sacking of the town, and it is a
prime sample of Luang Prabang style of temple and architecture.
Wat Xiengthong is the most photographed temple in Luang Prabnag and it is very easy to access on the way to the Luang Prabang jetty. From the Jetty you can make a trip to Pak Ou Cave by private traditional boat available there for service.
