Wat Xieng Khuane (Spirit
City Temple), 24 Km South of the town center, is not a true Wat since there are
no monks is residence and there never have been nor is there a Sim or any other
traditional Buddhist architecture. Locals often call it “Buddha Park”, a more
apt description since it is a collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures in a
meadow by the side of Mekong River. The style of the figures is remarkably
uniform. There is only one building on the grounds, a large pumpkin shaped
monument with three levels joined by interior spiral stair ways. It is said
that the three levels represent hell, earth and heaven. The rooms inside are
filled with small sculptures, you can either go in or look through windows from
and outer hallway at each level. The last spiral stairway leads into the top of
the sculpture outside.
