Located
on a curve of the Mekong River, Vientiane has a recorded history that stretches
back to around 1000 AD. The area was originally settled because of the
fertility of the surrounding alluvial plains, and Vientiane became the capital
city of Laos around the mid-16th century.
Vientiane is home to the most significant national
monument in Laos which the Symbol of Lao sovereignty and of Buddhism is Pha
That Luang (Great Stupa). Located at one of the hubs of the city on Lanexang
Avenue is Victory Monument “Patuxai”. Climb up to the top of Patuxai to reveal
the nicest view of the Vientiane. There are many beautiful Wats in Vientiane,
Wat Sisaket is one of the oldest temple in Vientiane built in 1818. Across the
street from Wat Sisaket is Hor Pra Keo, a house of many beautiful collection of
Buddha Statues including some in the “Calling for Rain” and Offering
Protection” poses that are outstanding examples of traditional Laos style and
craftsmanship. Other Buddhist holy places visiting are Wat Ong Teu Mahavihan,
known for its 16th century bronze Buddha sheltered by a carved
wooden masterpiece, and Wat Si Meuang, site of the Lak Meuang or Pillar stone
of Vientiane the most popular and venerated temple as it is
considered the guardian of the spirit of the city.
