Hor Phra Keo is located
opposite Wat Sisaket, this former royal temple of the Lao monarchy has
been converted to a museum. It is no longer a place of worship. This temple was
originally built in 1565 by King Setthathirath to house the “Phrakeo”, or
Emerald Buddha. Setthathirath brought this image with him from the Lanna
Kingdom in what is now northern Thailand when he inherited the throne in Luang
Prabang from his father. The Emerald Buddha was carried off to Bangkok by the
Siamese in 1779. They razed the Wat in 1828 during the general destruction of
the city. The temple was rebuilt between 1936 and 1942 by the French. It has
been a museum since the 1970’s. Wat Pra Keo contains Buddha images of many
different periods, Khmer inscription, Pali (The ancient religious language)
Manuscripts on palm leaf strips and other antique.
